As a purely sensory nerve the saphenous nerve innervates the medial side of the lower leg and foot; albeit with significant inter-patient variability. The adductor canal block involves injection of local anaesthetic into the adductor canal deep to the sartorius muscle and is a technically easy and reliable method for blocking the saphenous nerve.
